Following hugely popular classes at Summer Camp, and sold out workshops throughout 2024, Rob is coming back to The Walled Garden School!

Learn the basics behind the world of sign writing, block lettering, perspective and sign-design with a true master of his craft, Rob Walker. Rob is an expert sign-writer and enthusiast, with life-long experience in this field. You’ll leave this class with a board featuring your sign - with your hand-painted chosen letter or word.

Rob will guide, teach and chat with you, as you create your own board complete with hand painted lettering. You will finish the day with a beautiful board to take home, featuring your chosen letter or word.

All materials, paints and brushes are included, as is a wonderful, simple lunch.

What you will learn:

  • Drawing lettering by hand using block casual methods.

  • Drafting block lettering using perspective.

  • Optical spacing.

  • The principles behind lettering construction.

  • How to add convex and bevelled outcomes to drawn lettering.

  • How to transfer a design to a board ready for painting.

  • Handling a mahl (balancing) stick.

  • Handling traditional sign writing brushes.

You do not need any prior skills to attend this class!

Timings

10am: Presentation

10:30am: Questions

10:45am: Drawing Demo and Objectives

11am: Guests draw out their letter using instructions

11:30am: Transfer to a board

12pm: Begin painting

1pm: Lunch from Hawarden Estate Farm Shop

2pm: Finishing boards and 1:1 assistance were needed.

About Rob

Rob is an expert artist, artisan & educator based in Marsden, UK. He is one of the best in his field, and has been coming to Hawarden Estate events to host sign writing workshops for years. 

Passionate about typography, craft, detail and keeping heritage skills alive, he started out as a sign writer and mural painter - what was once known as a ‘decorator’.

Trained in a multitude of craft techniques, Rob's speciality is in the art of Verre Églomisé, which involves painstakingly painting a design and applying gold leaf onto the rear face of glass, once a commonly-used technique for signage, now an at-risk heritage skill.

Now Rob brings all of his experience and obsession together to create high-end pieces from the byUMBERTO studio, for exteriors, interiors, and collectors, and is increasingly exploring the creation of contemporary art pieces using traditional sign-writing methods.
